ABOUT: This unique team tournament was introduced at UNB in 1973 by Alfred Knappe (1933-2010), who served as one of our club coaches (1966-1976). Alfred was the founding president (1969-1972) of the NB Fencing Association. This tournament is a fundraiser for the Alfred Knappe Trust Fund for Coach and Referee Development.

ABOUT: As a direct result of the demise of the UNB Invitational Intercollegiate Maritime Fencing Championships (1972-1974) the UNB Challenge Shield (1975) was born, with it's name later being shortened to UNB Shield (1976). It is the longest running fencing tournament in Atlantic Canada. Other UNB tournaments existed at least back to 1953 (UNB Fencing Championships), possibly earlier. The Atlantic University Fencing Championship was last run in 2010.
